About this talk

This sermon walks through the plagues of Exodus (especially chapters 5–10) as a dramatic “boxing match” between Yahweh and Pharaoh, revealing the ultimate question of who is truly King and how people will respond to Him. The plagues unfold in a deliberate, patterned sequence—three cycles of three, each with escalating warnings—demonstrating God’s sovereign judgment over creation, His power surpassing Egypt’s magicians and gods, and His faithful protection of His own people even amid judgment. Pharaoh’s repeated pattern of shallow repentance, bargaining, and hardened defiance illustrates humanity’s tendency toward selective, transactional obedience rather than total allegiance to God, while the mysterious interplay of Pharaoh hardening his own heart and God hardening it points to the coexistence of divine sovereignty and human responsibility—a pattern echoed later in the crucifixion of Jesus, where Herod, Pilate, and others acted freely yet fulfilled God’s predetermined plan. Ultimately, the plagues were not simply about destruction but about revelation: God preserved Pharaoh and orchestrated events so that His power, name, and lordship would be known throughout the earth, calling all people—then and now—to humility, repentance, and trust in His saving promises rather than resistance or compromise.

Main points:

  • The plagues form a structured, purposeful sequence showing God’s judgment over all creation and His supremacy over Egypt’s gods and magic.
  • Pharaoh’s repeated bargaining and temporary repentance reveal the danger of shallow, self-serving faith and partial obedience.
  • The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart (by himself and by God) illustrates the mysterious coexistence of divine sovereignty and human responsibility, paralleled in the crucifixion of Jesus.
  • God protects His people amid judgment, foreshadowing the Passover and ultimately the salvation found in Christ.
  • The overarching purpose of the plagues was for God to reveal His power and name so that people would know He is Lord.
  • Application: believers today face the same choice—to trust God’s promises fully or to offer half-hearted, transactional allegiance.
